Bentonite Clay for Face: Benefits, How to Use & vs Multani Mitti

Bentonite clay is a highly absorbent volcanic clay that soaks up excess oil and lifts grime from pores, which makes it useful as a weekly mask for oily and acne-prone skin. It is stronger than kaolin and similar to multani mitti. Leave it on for 10 minutes, rinse before it cracks, and avoid it on dry or sensitive skin.

Bentonite clay masks are everywhere, from imported "healing clay" tubs to local beauty stores. They promise to "pull out toxins" and shrink pores overnight. The truth is more modest, but bentonite is still a genuinely useful tool for oily skin when used correctly. Here is how it works, how it compares with multani mitti and kaolin, and how to use it without drying your skin out.

Using a clay mask but still getting oily and breaking out?

A weekly mask controls surface oil; a daily cleanser keeps pores clear. Our Acne Relief Face Wash uses 2% Salicylic Acid with Niacinamide and Tea Tree to unclog pores and control oil, morning and night.

What is bentonite clay?

Bentonite is a clay formed from weathered volcanic ash. It is made mostly of a mineral called montmorillonite and is named after Fort Benton in the United States, where large deposits were found. It comes in two main types:

  • Sodium bentonite swells a great deal when wet and is very absorbent.
  • Calcium bentonite swells less and is a little gentler.

Bentonite carries a negative electrical charge and has a huge surface area. That lets it hold on to oil, dirt and some positively charged particles, which is what people mean when they say it "draws out" impurities.

What are the benefits of bentonite clay for the face?

  • Absorbs excess oil: skin looks less shiny for several hours after a mask.
  • Lifts surface grime such as sweat, pollution particles and leftover sunscreen.
  • Makes pores look smaller for a while by clearing oil from their openings. It does not change pore size permanently; see our guide to open pores.
  • Smooths texture slightly, because the clay lifts loose dead cells as you rinse.
  • May help acne-prone skin as a supporting step. One small uncontrolled study found that a clay and jojoba oil mask used two to three times a week reduced acne lesions over six weeks. That is encouraging but not strong proof.

What bentonite cannot do: remove "toxins" from your body, clear acne on its own, fade dark spots or permanently shrink pores.

Bentonite vs multani mitti vs kaolin: which clay should you use?

Clay Oil absorption Feel on skin Best for
Bentonite (sodium) Very high Tight, strong pull Very oily, congested skin
Multani mitti (fuller's earth) High Firm, drying if left long Oily and combination skin
Kaolin (white clay) Low to moderate Soft, gentle Combination, normal or mildly oily skin
Charcoal-clay blends High Similar to bentonite Oily skin; charcoal adds little extra

Multani mitti is closely related to bentonite. Both are rich in montmorillonite-type minerals, and in practice they behave similarly on the face. If you already have multani mitti at home and it suits you, there is no need to buy imported bentonite. If clay masks leave your skin tight and red, kaolin is the gentler choice.

How to use a bentonite clay mask

  1. Cleanse your face with a gentle face wash.
  2. Mix 1 teaspoon of bentonite with 1 to 1.5 teaspoons of water in a small bowl to make a smooth paste. Rose water or plain curd also work.
  3. Apply a thin, even layer on oily areas such as the forehead, nose and chin. Skip the eye area and any dry patches.
  4. Leave it on for 8 to 10 minutes, until it starts to lighten in colour but before it cracks.
  5. Rinse with lukewarm water using soft circular movements. Do not scrub.
  6. Moisturise straight away with a light, non-comedogenic moisturiser.

How often: once a week for most oily skin, up to twice a week for very oily skin in humid summers. Daily clay masks will dry out and irritate even oily skin.

Should you mix bentonite with apple cider vinegar?

Many online recipes mix bentonite with apple cider vinegar to "activate" it. Water activates clay just as well. Vinegar is acidic and can sting or irritate, especially on broken skin or active acne. If you want to try it, dilute the vinegar with an equal amount of water and patch test first. Read more in our guide to apple cider vinegar for skin.

Side effects and who should avoid bentonite clay

  • Dryness and tightness, especially if left on too long.
  • Redness or irritation on sensitive skin, rosacea or eczema.
  • Rebound oiliness: stripping skin too often can make it feel oilier later.
  • Contamination: clay is mined from the ground, and some products have been found to contain lead. Choose cosmetic-grade clay from a brand that tests for heavy metals, and never eat clay sold for skin.
  • Active, inflamed acne: clay will not calm deep, painful spots and rubbing it off can make them worse.

Where does a clay mask fit in an acne routine?

Think of clay as a weekly extra, not the foundation. The daily routine is what keeps pores clear:

  • Morning and night: a face wash for oily, acne-prone skin, ideally with salicylic acid.
  • Evening: a targeted treatment such as a salicylic acid or niacinamide serum.
  • Daily: a light moisturiser and sunscreen.
  • Weekly: a clay mask on mask night, skipping your exfoliating serum that evening.

Avoid using a clay mask on the same night as a strong acid exfoliant or retinoid. Together they can over-dry and irritate. Our oily skin routine for Indian weather shows how to lay out the week.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use bentonite clay every day?

No. Daily use dries skin and can damage the barrier. Once or twice a week is enough.

Does bentonite clay remove blackheads?

It can loosen oil at the surface of pores, making blackheads look lighter for a while. Salicylic acid works deeper and gives more lasting results.

Is bentonite clay good for dry skin?

Generally no. Dry skin is better suited to kaolin used briefly, or to a hydrating mask instead.

Why does my skin feel tight after a clay mask?

The clay has absorbed oil and some water from the surface. Rinse earlier next time and moisturise straight after.

Can I use a metal spoon to mix bentonite?

Brief contact with a steel spoon is fine. The warning against metal bowls is mostly a myth, though glass or ceramic is easiest to clean.
