Heel skin is structurally different from the skin anywhere else on your body. The stratum corneum there can be several times thicker than on your face, which is exactly what you want for load-bearing. But that same area has effectively no sebaceous glands — no oil production at all — so it depends entirely on what you put on it and on the moisture it retains.
Now add mechanics. Every step drives your body weight into the heel pad, and the fat pad spreads sideways under that load. Supple skin flexes with it. Dry, thickened skin cannot, so it splits. The splits start as shallow lines around the rim of the heel, then deepen into fissures that catch on fabric and, at their worst, bleed.
That is why moisturiser alone sometimes disappoints — you are treating the dryness but not the pressure that turns dryness into a crack.
What makes it worse in India specifically
- Open-backed footwear. Chappals, sliders and sandals let the heel fat pad spread outward with no support at the back, which is the single biggest mechanical contributor.
- Walking barefoot indoors. Common, comfortable, and it means constant friction against hard flooring plus dust that dries the surface further.
- Hot showers and hard water. Heat strips the lipids that were holding water in, and the mineral content in much of urban India's supply leaves a residue that raises surface pH.
- Winter and low humidity. Cracking peaks between November and February in most of North India — dry air pulls water out of an already oil-free surface.
- Standing for long hours. Retail, teaching, hospital and kitchen work all keep sustained load on the heel.
- Salt and dust exposure. Both are mildly desiccating on skin that has no oil to spare.
Cracked heels are also more common with increased body weight, in diabetes, in hypothyroidism, and with age as skin's natural lipid production declines.
What actually works — and in what order
The routine below matters more for its sequence than for any single product in it. Softening without sealing evaporates. Sealing without softening traps dryness in.
1. Soak briefly, not for long
Ten minutes in warm — not hot — water is enough to soften the surface. Longer soaking is counterproductive: it over-hydrates the outer layer, which then dries out further as the water leaves. Add nothing dramatic; plain water works, and a gentle body wash is fine.
2. Reduce thickness gently, once or twice a week
Use a pumice stone or a foot file on damp — not soaking — skin, with light pressure, only over the thickened area. The goal is to thin the callus enough that it can flex again, not to remove it. Two things to avoid outright: metal blade shavers, which remove living tissue and invite infection, and salon blade work if you are diabetic or have any circulation problem.
3. Apply a humectant while skin is still damp
This is the step people skip. Humectants — glycerin, hyaluronic acid, urea — draw water into the stratum corneum, and they need water available to do it. On bone-dry skin in a dry room, they work far less well. Apply within three minutes of towelling off.
4. Seal it in
Follow with a lotion or balm containing occlusive and emollient ingredients. This is what stops the water you just added from leaving over the next few hours. For heels specifically, apply a heavier layer at night than you would during the day.
5. Wear socks overnight
Cotton socks over a night application do two things: they stop the product transferring to your bedsheets, and they hold a slightly humid microclimate against the skin. This one habit changes results more than switching products does.
6. Change the footwear
Closed-back shoes with a cushioned heel for the hours you are on your feet most. If that is not practical, silicone heel cups are inexpensive and directly address the spreading that causes splits.

How long does it take?
With a consistent twice-daily routine, most people notice heels feel softer within about a week, visible surface roughness improves over two to three weeks, and shallow fissures close in three to four weeks. Deep, painful cracks take longer and need the mechanical side addressed too — no amount of lotion outpaces the pressure that is reopening the split every day.
The most common reason people conclude "nothing works" is stopping at week two, when the surface looks better but the callus has not yet thinned enough to flex.

When to see a doctor
Cracked heels are usually a skincare problem, but not always. See a doctor if you have diabetes and any heel cracking at all, if a fissure is bleeding or oozing, if there is surrounding redness, warmth, swelling or pus, if the skin is thickened and scaly in a well-defined pattern that does not respond to four weeks of consistent care, or if you have numbness or reduced sensation in your feet. Reduced sensation means you may not feel an infection developing, and that changes the risk considerably.

Why do my heels crack even though I moisturise?

Is it safe to use a blade or razor on cracked heels?

Does soaking feet in hot water help?
