The bite itself is an immune reaction. Mosquito saliva triggers histamine release, which produces the familiar red, itchy welt. That reaction is inflammatory — and inflammation in skin with active melanocytes prompts them to produce extra melanin at the site.
When the swelling resolves, the pigment stays. This is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), the same process that leaves marks after acne. It is the reason richly pigmented skin marks more readily and for longer than fair skin does: more melanocyte activity means a stronger pigment response to the same insult.
The distinction that matters clinically: PIH sits in the epidermis or upper dermis as excess pigment, with skin texture unchanged. A scar involves altered collagen and a visible change in the skin's surface. Almost all bite marks are the former.
Are they scars or will they fade?
They fade. Melanin is gradually cleared and shed as skin turns over — the process is just slow on the body.

Body skin turns over more slowly than facial skin, and legs are worse than arms. This is normal and not a sign the marks are permanent — it is why the same spot on a cheek clears in six weeks and on a shin takes five months.
Why legs are the worst case
Bite marks on the shins and calves are the most persistent, for four compounding reasons:
- Slower turnover. Lower-leg skin regenerates more slowly than anywhere on the face.
- Poorer circulation in the lower limbs slows the clearing of pigment.
- They get scratched most. Ankles and shins are the easiest place to scratch without thinking.
- They get sun exposure and no sunscreen. Almost nobody applies SPF below the knee, and UV directly darkens existing PIH.

What actually fades bite marks
Stop scratching first — it is not optional
Every scratch restarts the inflammatory cycle and deepens the pigment deposit. Scratching hard enough to break skin risks a genuine scar and secondary infection. Cold compresses, an antihistamine if the itching is severe, and keeping the area covered do more for the eventual mark than any serum applied later.
Sunscreen on exposed limbs
This is the single highest-impact step and the one almost everyone skips. UV stimulates the same melanocytes that are already overactive at the bite site, so an unprotected mark darkens faster than it fades. If your arms and legs see daylight, they need SPF — an oxybenzone-free SPF 50 is a sensible default.
Niacinamide
Niacinamide interrupts the transfer of melanin from melanocytes to surrounding skin cells, which is precisely the step that makes PIH visible. It also supports the barrier — useful on limbs that have been scratched. It is the most evidence-backed brightening active that stays comfortable on body skin. Kojic acid and vitamin C

Gentle exfoliation, sparingly

Moisturise properly
A compromised barrier heals slowly and pigments more. Daily lotion on legs and arms is not cosmetic here — it is part of the fading process.
A realistic routine for bite marks
- Daily, in the shower: a brightening body wash with niacinamide, kojic acid and vitamin C, left on the affected area for 30–60 seconds before rinsing.

- Every morning on exposed limbs: SPF 50.
- Twice a week: a mild AHA exfoliation, not a scrub.
- Throughout: do not scratch, and cover bites while they are fresh.

What does not work

- Bleaching creams with undisclosed steroids. Widely sold in India, and they thin skin and cause rebound pigmentation.
- Scrubbing hard. Re-inflames the exact site you are trying to calm.
When to see a doctor
Get a bite looked at if it becomes hot, spreading, painful or oozing, if you develop fever, if the mark is raised and thickening rather than flattening, or if a spot has not changed at all after six months of consistent care. Bites in some regions can transmit disease, and any bite with systemic symptoms is a medical matter rather than a skincare one.
