Dettol on Pimples: Is It Safe and Does It Work?

You shouldn't put Dettol antiseptic liquid on pimples. Its active ingredient, chloroxylenol, is made for cleaning cuts on the body. It must be diluted, and it can burn, dry out and inflame facial skin. It also can't reach the blocked pore where a pimple starts, so it doesn't treat acne. Salicylic acid and a gentle cleanser work better.

Dabbing Dettol on a pimple is one of the most common "quick fixes" in Indian homes. The reasoning seems sound: pimples involve bacteria, Dettol kills germs, so it should work. In practice, the result is often a pimple that looks drier for a day, followed by redness, peeling and a darker mark. Here is why, and what to do instead.

Want a routine made for pimples, not cuts?

The Clear Skin Duo pairs our Acne Relief Face Wash (2% salicylic acid, niacinamide and tea tree) with the Acne Relief Serum (2% salicylic acid + 5% niacinamide). The wash cleans without stripping and the serum works inside the pore.

What is in Dettol antiseptic liquid?

The classic Dettol antiseptic liquid sold in India contains chloroxylenol (about 4.8%) as its active germ-killing ingredient. It also contains pine oil, isopropyl alcohol and castor oil soap. The label directs you to dilute it with water before using it on skin, for purposes such as cleaning minor cuts and grazes, for personal hygiene and as a household disinfectant.

That instruction matters. Undiluted, this mix of an antiseptic, alcohol and aromatic oil is far too strong for the thin skin of the face. Dettol soaps, hand washes and sanitisers are separate products with different formulas. They are designed for hands and body, not for treating acne.

Why doesn't Dettol treat pimples?

Acne isn't a surface infection that you can wipe away. A pimple forms when excess oil and dead skin cells plug a pore. Cutibacterium acnes, a bacterium that normally lives on everyone's skin, then multiplies inside that plug and triggers inflammation.

An antiseptic dabbed on top has three problems:

  • It doesn't clear the plug. The blockage stays, so the pimple and the next ones keep forming.
  • It barely reaches the bacteria. They sit below the surface, inside the oily follicle.
  • It damages the skin barrier. Alcohol and harsh antiseptics strip the skin's protective oils and upset the skin's natural microbiome. The result is dryness, stinging and often more oil production in response.

Proven acne ingredients target the plug itself. Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, so it travels into the pore and loosens the build-up. Benzoyl peroxide is an antibacterial that is dosed and formulated for facial skin. See benzoyl peroxide vs salicylic acid and does salicylic acid kill bacteria.

What happens if you put Dettol on your face?

Reactions vary, but these are the common ones:

  • Burning and stinging, especially on a pimple that's already open or has been picked.
  • Dryness, tightness and peeling around the spot.
  • Irritant contact dermatitis: a red, rough, sore patch where the liquid was applied.
  • Allergic contact dermatitis. Chloroxylenol and pine oil are recognised skin allergens, so some people develop an itchy rash that spreads beyond the spot.
  • Chemical burns. Burns have been reported when concentrated antiseptic is left on the skin, particularly under a covering or for long periods.
  • Darker marks. On Indian skin, any inflammation can leave post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. An irritated pimple often leaves a darker, longer-lasting mark than it would have on its own.

If you've already used Dettol and your skin is burning, rinse it well with cool water. Stop using actives for a few days and apply a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser. If there is blistering or swelling, or the burning doesn't settle, see a doctor.

What about washing your face with Dettol water?

Some people add a few drops of Dettol to a bowl of water and wash their face with it daily. The Dettol is more diluted, but it is still an antiseptic being used every day on skin that doesn't need it. Over time, this can leave oily, acne-prone skin both dry and breaking out, because a stripped barrier is more reactive.

A face wash with 2% salicylic acid gives you the benefit people are looking for, cleaner pores, without the damage. Our salicylic face wash guide explains how to use one. If you get body acne, the same logic applies: see back and body acne.

Is it okay to use Dettol on a popped pimple?

A popped or picked pimple is a tiny open wound, so cleaning it makes sense. Undiluted Dettol is still too harsh for it. Rinse it gently with clean water or sterile saline and pat it dry. You can then cover it with a hydrocolloid pimple patch, which keeps it clean and stops you touching it. See do pimple patches work and should you pop a pimple.

What to use on pimples instead of Dettol

  1. Cleanse morning and night with a gentle salicylic acid face wash. Massage it in for 30–60 seconds, then rinse.
  2. Treat once a day with a 2% salicylic acid serum. Niacinamide alongside it calms redness and helps fade marks. See how to pair niacinamide and salicylic acid.
  3. Moisturise with a light, non-comedogenic moisturiser, even if your skin is oily.
  4. Protect every morning with SPF 50 so marks don't darken.
  5. Be patient. Most people see fewer new breakouts in 4–8 weeks. See how long salicylic acid takes to work.

Frequently asked questions

Can Dettol remove pimples overnight?

No. It may dry the surface of a pimple, but it doesn't clear the blocked pore, and it often leaves the skin red and irritated.

Is Dettol soap good for acne?

Antibacterial body soaps are usually too harsh for the face and aren't designed to unclog pores. A salicylic acid face wash is a better choice.

Can I use Dettol on pimples on my back?

The skin on the back is thicker, but the same problems apply. A salicylic acid body wash treats body acne without the irritation.

Does diluted Dettol help fungal acne?

No. Fungal acne is caused by yeast and needs different treatment. See our fungal acne guide.

Is Savlon better than Dettol for pimples?

Savlon is also an antiseptic designed for wounds, not acne. Neither is a suitable pimple treatment.
