How does skin make vitamin D?

Vitamin D synthesis is a UVB reaction. When UVB radiation in the 290–315 nm range hits the skin, it converts 7-dehydrocholesterol in the epidermis into previtamin D3, which then isomerises to vitamin D3 and is carried to the liver and kidneys for activation. The key detail is that this is a narrow wavelength band — the same short-wave UVB that causes sunburn and directly damages DNA. There is no wavelength that makes vitamin D without also carrying that risk.

The reaction is also self-limiting. After roughly 15–20 minutes of strong sun exposure, the skin reaches a plateau and further exposure produces inactive by-products rather than more vitamin D. Prolonged sun does not give you more vitamin D; it only gives you more damage.

So does sunscreen block vitamin D production?

What does the research actually say?

  • Indoor lifestyles. Office work, long commutes, and sun avoidance during the hottest hours mean limited midday exposure — which is when the UVB angle is right.
  • Clothing coverage. Culturally common full coverage reduces the exposed surface area available for synthesis.
  • Air pollution. Particulate matter over Indian cities scatters and absorbs UVB before it reaches skin.
  • Diet. Vegetarian diets are naturally low in vitamin D, and food fortification in India remains limited.

Sunscreen usage in India is low to begin with, so it cannot plausibly be the cause of a deficiency this widespread.

Should you skip sunscreen to get vitamin D?

No, and the risk maths is lopsided. Skipping sunscreen to raise vitamin D means accepting DNA damage, photoageing and — on Indian skin especially — worsened pigmentation, tanning and post-acne marks, all to address a problem that is far more efficiently solved with diet or a supplement. UV is the single largest driver of visible skin ageing and of the pigmentation that brightening routines spend months trying to fade.
