Fitkari (Alum) for Face: Benefits, Side Effects and How to Use It

Alum (fitkari) is an astringent mineral salt. On the face it gives a tight, fresh feeling and, as an after-shave, it helps stop bleeding from small nicks. It does not shrink pores permanently, clear acne or lighten skin, and rubbing a fitkari block on the face regularly tends to dry and irritate skin β€” especially if yours is dry or sensitive.

Want pores and pimples actually handled?

Our Clear Skin Duo pairs a 2% Salicylic Acid + Niacinamide Face Wash with the 2% Salicylic Acid + 5% Niacinamide Acne Relief Serum β€” cleanse, then treat inside the pore, the two steps a fitkari rub can't replace.

What is fitkari (alum)?

Fitkari, or phitkari, is potassium alum β€” a crystalline mineral salt (potassium aluminium sulphate) sold in India as clear or white lumps. It has had many household jobs: purifying water, as a traditional after-shave block in barber shops, as a deodorant crystal, as a gargle for mouth ulcers, and as a home remedy rubbed on the face for pimples, open pores and "glow".

Its effect on skin comes from being an astringent. Alum makes proteins on the skin surface tighten and draws the tissue together, which is why skin feels taut and a small shaving cut stops oozing. It also has mild antibacterial action, which is the basis of its use as a deodorant β€” bacteria are what make sweat smell.

What does fitkari actually do for your face?

Claim you will hear What is actually supportable
Stops bleeding from shaving nicks Yes. Alum is a styptic; it helps small cuts stop bleeding.
Feels tightening and refreshing Yes, briefly. The tight feeling is the astringent effect on the skin surface.
Shrinks open pores Temporarily at most. Pores can look slightly tighter for a short time, but their size does not change.
Clears pimples No good evidence. Mild antibacterial action does not unblock the pore where a pimple forms.
Reduces oiliness Briefly. The skin can feel less greasy for a few hours; oil production is not changed.
Lightens skin or fades dark spots No. Alum has no action on melanin.

Open pores are mostly set by genetics, oil production and how much the skin around the pore has lost firmness. Our guide to the best acid for open pores explains why salicylic acid is the ingredient that keeps pores clear enough to look smaller.

Is fitkari safe to use on your face?

Used occasionally on healthy, oily skin, a quick wipe of alum water is low-risk. Used daily, or rubbed directly as a block on sensitive or dry skin, it causes problems more often than people expect.

Side effects to watch for

  • Dryness and tightness that does not go away. Astringents strip moisture and can weaken the skin barrier with repeated use. Our skin barrier guide explains why that matters.
  • Stinging and redness, especially on freshly shaved, threaded or waxed skin, or on open pimples.
  • Rebound oiliness. Over-dried skin can respond by producing more oil.
  • Irritant dermatitis β€” a rough, itchy rash in people with sensitive or eczema-prone skin.
  • Dark marks. On Indian skin, repeated irritation can leave post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Who should avoid it on the face

Skip fitkari on the face if your skin is dry, sensitive, eczema-prone or rosacea-prone, if you are using retinoids or exfoliating acids, or if you have open or picked pimples. And never rub the block over broken skin, beyond the tiny nicks it is meant for.

Fitkari as an after-shave: the one use that makes sense

This is alum's strongest case. After shaving, wet the block with cold water and glide it lightly over the shaved area once. It stings briefly on any nicks, helps them stop bleeding and leaves the skin feeling clean. Rinse after a minute and follow with a light moisturiser to replace the moisture the alum draws out.

It will not prevent ingrown hairs or razor bumps on its own β€” those come down to shaving technique, blade sharpness and exfoliation. See our guide to razor bumps after shaving for what helps. Rinse and dry the block after each use, and do not share it: a block used on several people's nicks can pass on bacteria.

How to use fitkari on your face more safely

  1. Patch test first on the jaw or inner arm and wait 24 hours β€” our patch test guide shows how.
  2. Dilute it. Dissolve a small pinch of powdered alum in a cup of water rather than rubbing a dry block on the face.
  3. Wipe, don't scrub. Use a cotton pad over oily areas such as the T-zone, avoiding the eyes and lips.
  4. Rinse after a minute and apply a light, non-comedogenic moisturiser.
  5. Keep it to once or twice a week at most, and stop at the first sign of dryness or stinging.

What works better for pores and pimples

Pores and pimples share one root cause: oil and dead skin building up inside the follicle. Alum tightens the surface for an hour; it does not clear what is inside. A two-step routine does:

Step What to use Why it helps
1. Cleanse, AM and PM A salicylic acid + niacinamide face wash Removes surface oil and starts loosening build-up in pores
2. Treat, once or twice daily A 2% salicylic acid + 5% niacinamide serum Salicylic acid is oil-soluble and works inside the pore; niacinamide calms redness and helps regulate oil
3. Moisturise A light, non-comedogenic moisturiser Keeps the barrier strong so skin does not overproduce oil
4. Protect, every morning SPF 50 sunscreen Stops acne marks darkening and protects the skin's firmness around pores

Steps 1 and 2 come together in the Clear Skin Duo. Most people notice clearer-looking pores and fewer new breakouts after four to eight weeks of consistent use. Frequently asked questions

Can I use fitkari on my face daily?

It is not recommended. Daily use of an astringent like alum tends to dry and irritate facial skin over time. Once or twice a week, diluted and rinsed off, is the upper limit for oily skin.

Does fitkari remove pimples?

There is no good evidence that it does. It may make skin feel cleaner, but it does not clear the blocked pore behind a pimple, and it stings on open spots.

Does fitkari close open pores permanently?

No. Pores can look slightly tighter for a short while, but alum does not change pore size. Keeping pores clear with salicylic acid is what makes them look smaller over time.

Is fitkari good for skin whitening?

No. Alum has no effect on melanin and does not change skin tone. Irritation from overuse can actually leave dark marks.

Is it safe to use fitkari after shaving?

Yes, this is its most sensible use. A quick wipe helps stop bleeding from small nicks. Rinse it off and moisturise afterwards, and use your own block rather than a shared one.

Can fitkari be used as a deodorant?

Yes. Alum crystals reduce odour-causing bacteria on the underarms, though they do not stop sweating the way antiperspirants do. See why underarms smell for more.
