Humectants pull water into the skin, emollients smooth and soften the gaps between skin cells, and occlusives seal the surface so that water cannot escape. Almost every moisturiser is a blend of the three. Knowing which one your skin is short of is what turns a label into a decision.

A humectant is an ingredient that attracts and binds water, drawing it into the upper layers of the skin. It is the "add water" step. Humectants are water-loving molecules β hyaluronic acid, glycerin, sodium PCA, urea, panthenol, honey and propylene glycol are the ones you will see most often on an Indian skincare label.
Hyaluronic acid is the best known: it holds many times its own weight in water and sits comfortably even on oily skin, which is why oil-prone skin still needs hydration. Glycerin is the quiet workhorse β cheaper, extremely well studied, and present in more formulas than almost any other active. We cover it in detail in glycerin for face.
The catch: a humectant pulls water from wherever it can reach. In humid air it draws moisture from the environment. In very dry air β an aeroplane cabin, a heavily air-conditioned office, a Delhi winter β it can pull water up from deeper in your skin and then lose it to the atmosphere if nothing seals it in. That is why a humectant alone can leave skin feeling tighter, not softer.
What is an emollient?
An emollient fills the microscopic gaps between skin cells, making the surface feel smooth, flexible and soft. It is the "fix the texture" step. If your skin feels rough, flaky or crepey rather than tight, an emollient is what it is missing.
Common emollients include squalane, jojoba oil, shea butter, ceramides, fatty alcohols such as cetearyl alcohol, and most plant oils. Squalane is a good example of a lightweight one; shea butter sits at the rich end. Ceramides deserve a special mention because they do double duty β they smooth like an emollient and also replace lipids the barrier itself is built from, which is why they show up in almost every barrier repair formula.
What is an occlusive?
An occlusive forms a physical film over the skin that slows transepidermal water loss β the constant evaporation of water from your skin into the air. It is the "lock it in" step, and it is the most effective of the three at reducing water loss outright.
Petrolatum, mineral oil, dimethicone, lanolin and beeswax are the classic occlusives. Petrolatum reduces water loss by a very large margin, which is why it dominates barrier ointments and why slugging works at all. The trade-off is weight and, for some skin types, congestion β a heavy occlusive over an unwashed, oily face in Indian humidity is a reliable way to get bumps.

How to read a moisturiser label using this
Read the first six or seven ingredients, categorise each one, and the formula's character becomes obvious. Ingredients are listed by descending concentration down to 1%, so what appears early is what the product mostly is.
- Water, glycerin, sodium hyaluronate near the top, no heavy oils: a humectant-led gel. Light, good for oily and combination skin, good in humidity β but it will not be enough alone in a dry winter.
- Cetearyl alcohol, squalane, ceramides, shea in the top half: an emollient-led cream. This is the right shape for rough, flaky, sensitised skin.
- Petrolatum or dimethicone high on the list: occlusive-led. Excellent for barrier repair and severe dryness, potentially too much for daily wear on oily skin.
- A humectant early plus an emollient mid-list plus a light occlusive: a balanced daily moisturiser. This is what most people actually want.
Which one does your skin actually need?
Match the ingredient class to the symptom, not to your skin type label. The most common mistake is treating dehydration with oil.

- Skin feels rough and flaky β emollients. Oil is genuinely what is missing.
- Skin stings, reacts to everything, looks red β emollients plus a light occlusive, and pause your actives while the barrier recovers.
- Everything sits fine, you just want it to last β a balanced formula, and a sunscreen over the top in the morning.

Do you need all three?
In most Indian climates, a humectant plus a light emollient is enough for daily use, with an occlusive reserved for winter, flights or barrier repair. Humidity does part of the sealing job for you for much of the year. In dry northern winters, or if you live in air conditioning, adding an occlusive at night is a sensible seasonal adjustment rather than a permanent one.
Frequently asked questions
Is hyaluronic acid a humectant or an emollient?
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant. It attracts and holds water but does nothing to smooth the lipid gaps between skin cells, which is why it works best under a moisturiser rather than instead of one.
Is glycerin better than hyaluronic acid?
Neither is better β they are both humectants and are often used together. Glycerin is smaller and penetrates more readily; hyaluronic acid holds more water at the surface. Many well-built formulas include both.
Can a moisturiser be all three?
Yes, and most good ones are. A typical daily cream contains glycerin or hyaluronic acid as the humectant, fatty alcohols or plant oils as emollients, and a small amount of dimethicone as a light occlusive.
Are occlusives bad for acne-prone skin?
Not automatically. Dimethicone is generally well tolerated by acne-prone skin, while heavy waxes and thick oils are more likely to congest. If you are acne-prone, choose a lighter occlusive and keep it to night use.
Do I still need a moisturiser if I use a hydrating serum?
Usually yes. A hydrating serum is mostly humectant; without an emollient or occlusive layer over it, the water it draws in is free to evaporate. Serum versus moisturiser covers the overlap.
What is transepidermal water loss?
It is the natural evaporation of water from the deeper skin out through the surface. A healthy barrier keeps it low. When it rises β from over-exfoliation, harsh cleansers or cold dry air β skin feels tight and looks dull no matter how much water you drink.
