Masoor Dal for Face: Does It Really Remove Tan?

An orange bowl of split red masoor dal beside a swatch of red lentil face pack paste

Masoor dal (red lentil) paste works as a gentle physical scrub and cleanser. That can leave skin feeling smoother and looking fresher for a day. It does not remove tan, lighten skin or fade pigmentation. Tan fades as your skin renews itself over a few weeks, and daily sunscreen plus a brightening active speeds up the process far more reliably.

Masoor dal face packs are a staple of Indian home beauty. The dal is soaked and ground with milk, or mixed as a powder with curd, honey or a pinch of turmeric. They are promised to "remove tan in one use" and "whiten" skin. Here is what red lentil really does on your face, why the tan claims don't hold up, how to use it without damaging your skin, and what actually works for tan and dull skin.

Using masoor dal to get rid of a tan?

A tan fades faster when you stop new tanning and even out what is there. The Element Ultimate Brightening Combo pairs the 10% Niacinamide + 1% Zinc Brightening Serum with the 2% Niacinamide SPF 50 PA++++ Sunscreen for a simple treat-and-protect routine.

What does masoor dal do for the skin?

Masoor dal is mostly protein, starch and fibre. Ground into a paste or powder, it does three things on the skin:

  • Physical exfoliation. The ground particles lift loose dead cells from the surface as you rub, which is why skin feels smoother afterwards.
  • Oil absorption. Starches soak up surface sebum, so oily skin looks matte for a few hours.
  • Gentle cleansing. Like besan, lentil flour picks up dirt and oil without the lather of soap.

These are real but surface-level effects. Masoor dal has no proven action on melanin, the pigment that makes a tan, dark spots or melasma. Its well-known cousin, besan, works the same way; see besan for face.

Does masoor dal remove tan?

Not in the way it is marketed. A tan is extra melanin that UV triggers in the skin. Some of it sits in the outer layer, where it gets shed naturally over about two to four weeks. Some sits deeper and takes longer to fade.

A scrub can speed up shedding a little at the very surface, so a masoor pack may make a fresh tan look very slightly lighter. But the brighter look right after a pack is mostly:

  • smoother skin that reflects light more evenly;
  • oil removed, so skin looks less shiny and dark;
  • a slight flush from rubbing, which reads as "glow".

All three wear off within a day. Meanwhile, if you go back into the sun without sunscreen, you are adding new tan faster than any scrub can remove it. See how long a tan takes to fade and does sunscreen prevent tanning.

Can masoor dal lighten skin or fade dark spots?

No. Your natural skin tone is genetic, and no dal, flour or kitchen ingredient changes it. Dark spots, such as post-acne marks, sun spots or melasma, need ingredients that slow melanin production or its transfer, used daily for weeks. These include niacinamide, alpha arbutin, kojic acid, tranexamic acid and vitamin C, always alongside sunscreen. Over-scrubbing dark spots can actually make them darker, because friction and irritation trigger more pigment on brown skin.

Masoor dal vs other de-tan options

Option How it works Effect on tan Risk
Masoor dal pack Physical scrub, oil absorption Slight, short-lived Micro-tears if coarse or rubbed hard
Besan / ubtan Physical scrub, cleansing Slight, short-lived Low to moderate
Lemon or tomato Acidic juice Unproven Irritation; lemon can cause dark patches in sun
Niacinamide serum Reduces pigment transfer to skin cells Gradual, over weeks Low
Daily SPF 50 PA++++ Blocks the UV that creates tan Prevents new tan, so old tan can fade Low

How to use a masoor dal face pack safely

  1. Grind it fine. Soak the dal for a few hours and grind it to a smooth paste, or use finely milled powder. Coarse, gritty bits cause micro-tears.
  2. Choose a gentle base. Raw milk, curd or rose water all work. Skip lemon.
  3. Apply to clean, damp skin, avoiding the eye area and any active pimples.
  4. Leave for 10 minutes. Don't let it dry hard and crack.
  5. Remove gently. Wet your fingers and massage in light circles for no more than 30 seconds, then rinse. Don't scrub hard.
  6. Moisturise afterwards, and use sunscreen the next morning.

Once a week is enough. Any scrub used more often starts to thin and irritate the skin's surface. Read how often you should exfoliate.

Who should skip masoor dal packs?

  • Active acne. Rubbing over inflamed pimples spreads redness and increases the risk of dark marks.
  • Sensitive, eczema-prone or rosacea-prone skin. Physical scrubbing is usually too harsh.
  • Skin already using strong actives. Don't combine a masoor scrub with retinol, glycolic acid or a chemical peel on the same day.
  • Lentil allergy. This is uncommon, but patch-test first. See how to patch-test skincare.

Common masoor dal combinations

Masoor dal + raw milk is the gentlest classic version. See raw milk on face. Masoor dal + curd is a little more soothing for dry skin. Masoor dal + turmeric is fine as a pinch, but more can stain and irritate; read side effects of turmeric on the face. Masoor dal + lemon is the one to skip: lemon adds irritation and sun-sensitivity risk with no proven benefit. See lemon on the face.

What actually works for tan and dull skin

  • Sunscreen every morning, broad spectrum, SPF 50 with a high PA rating, reapplied when you are outdoors. This single step does more for tan than any pack. See how to apply sunscreen on the face.
  • Niacinamide (5–10%) daily, to even tone gradually over 8–12 weeks.
  • Gentle chemical exfoliation, such as lactic or mandelic acid once or twice a week, which is kinder to brown skin than hard scrubbing.
  • Patience. Most tans fade within a month once you stop re-tanning. The full plan is in our de-tan guide for Indian skin.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use masoor dal on my face daily?

It isn't recommended. Daily scrubbing damages the skin barrier and can cause dryness, sensitivity and even darker patches.

Does masoor dal remove facial hair?

No. Rubbing may loosen a few fine hairs, but it does not remove hair in any lasting way, and hard rubbing to try irritates the skin.

Is masoor dal good for oily skin?

It can absorb oil and leave skin matte for a few hours. It doesn't reduce oil production, though. Niacinamide does that better.

Masoor dal or besan: which is better for the face?

They behave very similarly as gentle scrubs and cleansers. Choose the one your skin tolerates better, and use a fine grind either way.

How soon will I see results from a masoor dal pack?

You'll feel smoother skin right away, but the effect lasts about a day. For a tan to fade, expect two to four weeks of daily sunscreen, whether or not you use a pack.
