PHAs — polyhydroxy acids — are the gentlest family of chemical exfoliants, best known as gluconolactone and lactobionic acid. Their molecules are larger than AHAs, so they work mainly at the skin surface rather than penetrating deeply. That means slower, milder resurfacing with far less stinging, plus a humectant effect that leaves skin hydrated rather than tight.

What is a polyhydroxy acid?

A PHA is chemically a next-generation AHA. It shares the same core structure but carries multiple hydroxyl groups instead of one — hence "poly". Two practical consequences follow from that difference.

First, molecular size. Gluconolactone has a molecular weight of roughly 180 daltons against glycolic acid's 76. A larger molecule diffuses into the skin more slowly and less deeply, so the exfoliation is concentrated in the uppermost layers where dead cells actually need loosening, and far less of it reaches the nerve endings that register acids as stinging.

Second, water-binding. Those extra hydroxyl groups attract and hold water. A PHA therefore acts as a humectant while it exfoliates — an unusual combination, and the reason PHA-treated skin often feels plumper rather than stripped. Lactobionic acid, made from lactose, is the most strongly hydrating of the group and also has genuine antioxidant activity.

The three you will actually see on labels

  • Gluconolactone — the workhorse PHA. Mild exfoliation, humectant, well tolerated at 4–10%.
  • Lactobionic acid — the most hydrating and the largest molecule; the gentlest of the three, with antioxidant properties.
  • Galactose — less common, usually a supporting ingredient rather than the hero.

The honest summary is that a PHA is not a better acid — it is a slower, kinder one. Who should actually use a PHA?

PHAs earn their place in four situations.

Sensitive and reactive skin. If acids consistently leave you red and stinging, a PHA is the version most people tolerate. Clinical work on gluconolactone has found it usable by people with rosacea and atopic skin who cannot handle glycolic acid.

Beginners. Starting with a low-strength PHA lets you learn how your skin responds to chemical exfoliation before committing to something stronger.

Who should look elsewhere: if you have oily, congested, acne-prone skin, salicylic acid is a materially better fit, because surface-level exfoliation does little for a plug sitting deep in a follicle. And if your main concern is stubborn pigmentation, niacinamide, alpha arbutin or kojic acid work on melanin production directly rather than relying on cell turnover.

How to use a PHA

Start twice a week at night, on clean dry skin, and build to alternate nights over a month if there is no irritation. Follow with a moisturiser. Do not layer a PHA with an AHA, a BHA or a retinoid on the same night while you are still establishing tolerance — the fact that PHAs are gentle does not make them additive-proof.

PHAs are generally considered less photosensitising than AHAs because of that limited penetration, but any exfoliation reveals newer cells at the surface. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is non-negotiable, particularly on Indian skin where UV-driven pigmentation is the most common consequence of exfoliating without protection.

Expect gradual results. Where a glycolic acid routine might show smoother texture in two to three weeks, a PHA typically takes six to eight. That slowness is the feature you are paying for.

What a PHA will not do

It will not clear blackheads from an oily nose, it will not fade deep melasma, and it will not deliver a peel-level result. Treat it as maintenance and tolerance-building, not correction. Is PHA better than AHA?

Not better — gentler. PHAs cause less irritation and add hydration, but they exfoliate more slowly and less deeply. AHAs remain the stronger choice for texture and pigmentation on skin that tolerates them.

Can I use PHA every day?

Some people can, once tolerance is established, particularly with a low-strength formula. Start at two nights a week and increase only if skin stays calm. Daily use of any exfoliant risks barrier damage.

Can I use PHA with niacinamide?
