Sulphates are a family of surfactants — molecules that let water lift away oil and dirt. The two you will see on a label are sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulphate (SLES). They are what makes a face wash foam generously and rinse clean, and they are inexpensive and highly effective, which is why they became the default in cleansers, shampoos and body washes worldwide.
Every cleanser needs a surfactant of some kind. Skin oil is not water-soluble; without something to bridge oil and water, rinsing does very little. The question is never "surfactant or no surfactant" — it is which one, at what concentration, and for how long.
SLS vs SLES: they are not the same thing
SLS and SLES differ by one manufacturing step, and that step changes how harsh they are. SLES is ethoxylated — extra units are added to the molecule — which makes it larger, milder and much less likely to disrupt skin proteins. Most modern "gentle foaming" cleansers use SLES or a coco-derived surfactant rather than neat SLS.

One quirk worth knowing: SLS is used deliberately in dermatology research as a standard irritant to provoke a controlled reaction during patch testing. That fact circulates online as proof that SLS "damages skin". What it actually demonstrates is that SLS at high concentration, held against skin under an occlusive patch for many hours, reliably irritates. A face wash at a fraction of that concentration, rinsed off in sixty seconds, is a different exposure entirely.
So is SLS actually bad for your skin?
For most people, a rinse-off cleanser containing SLS is not harmful — but it is one of the more stripping options available, and there is little reason to choose it for facial skin when milder systems clean just as well. The honest position sits between the two loudest arguments.
SLS earns its reputation in three specific situations:

- If you wash frequently. Twice a day with a strong surfactant compounds. Once a day with the same product may be entirely fine.
- If you live with hard water. Hard water and strong surfactants together leave more residue and more tightness — a real issue across much of North India, covered in hard water and skin in India.
Equally, the claims that SLS causes cancer or accumulates in organs are not supported by the evidence. Regulatory reviews have repeatedly assessed it as safe at the concentrations used in rinse-off products.
Does "sulphate-free" mean gentle?
No. Sulphate-free is a statement about one ingredient family, not about how a formula behaves on skin. A sulphate-free cleanser can still be stripping if it uses a high concentration of another aggressive surfactant, or if it is highly alkaline.
Two things predict gentleness far better than the sulphate-free badge:
- pH. Healthy skin sits at roughly pH 4.7–5.5. Traditional soap runs around pH 9–10 and disrupts that for hours after washing — one of the reasons soap on your face is a bad idea regardless of what surfactant is in it.
- Surfactant blend. Milder cleansers pair a primary surfactant with secondary ones and add humectants such as glycerin to soften the effect. This is why the ingredient list matters more than any single name on the front of the bottle.
How to tell if your face wash is too strong
The clearest test is how your skin feels five minutes after rinsing, before you apply anything else. Comfortable and soft is right. The signs a cleanser is stripping you:
- A tight, squeaky feeling that you may have been taught to read as "clean" — it is actually lipid loss
- Flaking or rough patches appearing within a week of switching products
- Skin that gets oilier through the day, not less — a common rebound after over-cleansing
- Stinging when you apply a serum you previously tolerated
- New sensitivity, redness, or products suddenly "not agreeing" with you

What to look for instead
Choose a cleanser by surfactant blend, pH and what else it is doing for your skin — not by what it leaves out.
