PA stands for "Protection Grade of UVA" — a Japanese rating that tells you how well a sunscreen blocks UVA rays, the ones that cause tanning, pigmentation and premature ageing. More plus signs mean more UVA protection: PA+ is low, PA++++ is the highest. SPF only measures UVB. You need both numbers.

What does PA actually stand for?

PA is short for Protection Grade of UVA, a labelling system created by the Japan Cosmetic Industry Association and now used across most of Asia, including India. It exists because SPF — the number almost everyone shops by — describes only one half of what sunlight does to skin.

Sunlight reaches you as two relevant wavelengths. UVB is shorter, sits on the surface, and is what burns you. UVA is longer, penetrates deeper into the dermis, and is what drives tanning, pigmentation and the collagen breakdown that shows up years later as fine lines and loss of firmness. SPF is a UVB measurement. PA is the UVA one.

So a bottle labelled "SPF 50" alone is telling you it handles burning well and telling you nothing about the rays most responsible for the concerns Indian skin actually comes to a dermatologist with: uneven tone, stubborn tan, dark patches and melasma.

What do the plus signs mean? PA+ to PA++++ explained

Each plus sign corresponds to a measured range on the PPD test (Persistent Pigment Darkening) — a controlled test where skin is exposed to UVA and the darkening response is compared with and without sunscreen. The PPD value is roughly "how many times longer it takes UVA to visibly darken protected skin."

Note the ranges are open-ended at the top: PA++++ means a PPD of at least 16, so two PA++++ sunscreens are not necessarily identical. It is a floor, not a precise score.

Is PA+++ enough, or do you need PA++++?

For most people in India, PA+++ is a genuinely good daily standard and PA++++ is the better one if pigmentation is your main concern. The step from PA+++ to PA++++ is the difference between "high" and "very high" UVA defence — meaningful if you are actively trying to fade dark spots, manage melasma, or stop a tan from rebuilding faster than you can fade it.

Here is the part people miss: UVA is far more constant than UVB. It barely dips in winter, passes through cloud cover, and passes through window glass. UVB largely does not. That is why a car commute or a desk beside a window still adds up as UVA exposure while you feel no heat and see no burn.

If you are already using an active that increases sensitivity — an AHA, salicylic acid, retinol — a high PA grade stops you undoing the work. Fading pigmentation while letting UVA back in is the most common reason a brightening routine stalls.

SPF vs PA: how to read a label properly

Read the two numbers as answering two separate questions.

  • PA — UVA. How well protected you are from tanning, pigmentation and photoageing.

The ideal daily label for Indian conditions reads SPF 50 PA++++, or SPF 50 PA+++ at minimum. A high SPF with a low PA rating is an incomplete product no matter how impressive the SPF number looks on the front of the bottle.

What about "broad spectrum" and the UVA circle?

Different regions label UVA differently, which is why the same shelf can carry three systems at once.

  • PA+ to PA++++ — the Japanese/Asian PPD-based system, most common in India.
  • UVA in a circle — the European mark. It confirms UVA protection is at least one-third of the labelled SPF. It is a pass/fail ratio, not a grade, so it scales with SPF rather than telling you an absolute level.
  • "Broad spectrum" — a US-style term meaning the product protects against both UVA and UVB. It is a threshold claim, not a measurement, so it is the least informative of the three.

If a sunscreen carries only "broad spectrum" and no PA rating or UVA circle, you cannot tell how much UVA protection you are getting.

Does a high PA rating change how the sunscreen feels?

Not necessarily. UVA protection comes from the filter system, not from thickness. Modern filters deliver PA++++ in textures that sit well under makeup and do not leave a grey cast on brown skin — which was the real reason so many Indian users abandoned sunscreen a decade ago. A high PA rating only works if you apply enough

PA++++ is measured at a standard application density of 2 mg per square centimetre of skin. Most people apply between a quarter and half of that, which means the protection you actually get is a fraction of what the label promises. For a face and neck that is roughly two finger-lengths of product, or about a quarter-teaspoon.

What to look for when buying

  • SPF 50 PA++++ on the label, not SPF alone.

Frequently asked questions

Is PA+++ better than SPF 50?

They are not comparable — they measure different rays. PA+++ describes high UVA protection; SPF 50 describes high UVB protection. A good sunscreen carries both, ideally SPF 50 with PA+++ or PA++++.

What is the highest PA rating available?

PA++++ is the highest, corresponding to a PPD value of 16 or more. There is no PA+++++ — four plus signs is the top of the scale.

Does PA++++ prevent tanning completely?

No. It substantially reduces UVA-driven tanning when applied at the right quantity and reapplied, but no sunscreen blocks 100% of UV. Shade, clothing and timing still matter, especially between 10am and 4pm.

Do I need a PA rating if I stay indoors?

UVA passes through window glass, so if you sit near a window or commute by car, a PA-rated sunscreen is still worth wearing. In a room with no daylight, the need drops considerably.

Why do some Indian sunscreens show no PA rating?

PA labelling is voluntary in India. Its absence does not prove there is no UVA protection, but it does mean the brand has not published a measured grade — which is reason enough to choose one that has.
