You need sunscreen indoors only in specific situations — mainly if you sit near a window, drive, or spend long stretches on a balcony or open verandah. Ordinary window glass blocks almost all UVB but lets roughly half of UVA through, and UVA is the wavelength that drives tanning, pigmentation and photoageing.

Does UV light come through windows?

UVA passes through standard glass; UVB largely does not. This single fact explains almost every "do I need sunscreen indoors" answer. UVB, wavelengths of 290–320 nm, is the burning ray, and ordinary glass absorbs nearly all of it. UVA, at 320–400 nm, has longer wavelengths that pass through untreated glass in substantial quantity.

UVA does not make you go red, which is why it is easy to dismiss. It penetrates deeper into the dermis than UVB, generates free radicals, degrades collagen and elastin, and stimulates melanocytes — the pigment-producing cells that drive tanning, dark spots and melasma. On Indian skin, which has more active melanocytes to begin with, that pigment response is the main visible cost of UVA exposure.

The clearest evidence of what this looks like over decades is asymmetric photoageing in professional drivers: measurably deeper wrinkling and more pigmentation on the window side of the face. It is an extreme case built on years of daily exposure, but the mechanism is the same one operating at a desk.

When do you actually need sunscreen indoors?

Base the decision on your distance from glass and how long you sit there, not on whether you are technically inside. UV intensity falls off sharply with distance from the window.

Two Indian specifics are worth naming. Many homes and offices use tinted or reflective glazing, which cuts UVA far more than clear glass does — if your window film noticeably darkens the view, your exposure is lower. What about screens and blue light?

Screens are a much smaller factor than sunlight through the same window. Laptops and phones emit visible light, including high-energy visible light in the blue range, but at intensities orders of magnitude below daylight. Sitting outdoors on an overcast afternoon exposes you to far more blue light than a full working day at a monitor.

The caveat is that visible light can contribute to pigmentation in deeper skin tones, and that effect is documented. If you already have melasma or stubborn dark spots, a tinted sunscreen with iron oxides adds protection across visible light that a clear formula does not. How do you read a label for indoor UVA protection?

SPF measures UVB protection, so it tells you almost nothing about the indoor problem — the PA rating is the number that matters through glass. The PA system grades UVA protection from PA+ to PA++++, with PA++++ the highest available.

How much sunscreen do you need if you are indoors all day?

Apply the full amount once in the morning and reapply once around mid-afternoon — indoor exposure is lower intensity, but it is also longer and uninterrupted. The dose does not change: roughly two finger-lengths for the face and neck, which is about a quarter teaspoon. Reapplication indoors is simpler than outdoors because there is no sweat or water to contend with. One reapplication after lunch is enough for a desk-bound day; if you step out for a commute or a site visit, treat that as outdoor exposure and reapply after. Frequently asked questions

Do I need sunscreen at home if I never sit near a window?

No. In an interior room with no direct daylight, UV exposure is negligible. Sunscreen is not doing anything useful there, though many people keep the habit so they never have to decide.

Does tinted or film-coated car glass make sunscreen unnecessary?

Windscreens are usually laminated and block most UVA, but side windows are typically tempered glass and let it through. Quality UV film helps substantially. If you drive regularly in daylight, wear sunscreen anyway — the driver's side of the face takes the exposure.

Can I get vitamin D through a window?

No. Vitamin D synthesis needs UVB, which ordinary glass blocks almost entirely. Sitting by a sunny window does not raise your vitamin D — and it is not a reason to skip sunscreen.

Is SPF 30 enough for indoors?

SPF 30 is fine for UVB, but check the PA rating, since UVA is the indoor concern. An SPF 30 PA++++ formula protects better through glass than an SPF 50 PA++ one.

Do I need sunscreen indoors during monsoon or on cloudy days?

Cloud cover reduces UV but does not remove it, and UVA penetrates cloud more readily than UVB. If you sit by a window, keep the habit through the year.
