Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that loosens the bonds holding dead cells on the skin surface, so they shed instead of accumulating. Because its molecule is larger than glycolic acid's, it penetrates more slowly and irritates less — which makes it the AHA of choice for dry, dull or sensitive skin rather than for oily, congested skin.

What does lactic acid do for your skin?

Lactic acid works at two levels at once, which is unusual for an exfoliant. At the surface it breaks down the desmosome bonds between corneocytes so dead cells release — the same mechanism as every AHA. Below that, it also functions as a humectant: lactate is a component of the skin's own natural moisturising factor, so it draws and holds water in the stratum corneum.

That dual action is why lactic acid does not leave skin as tight and stripped as a stronger acid can. In practical terms you can expect:

  • Smoother texture — noticeable within two to three weeks of twice-weekly use.
  • Brighter, less dull skin, because light reflects evenly off a smooth surface rather than scattering off flakes.
  • Gradual fading of surface pigmentation — superficial dark marks lift faster as cells turn over. Deep pigment such as melasma sits below its reach.
  • Better absorption of whatever you apply afterwards.
  • Improved hydration, unlike most exfoliating acids.

Lactic acid vs glycolic, mandelic and salicylic acid

Molecule size is the whole story with AHAs: the smaller the molecule, the deeper and faster it goes, and the more it can irritate.

What strength of lactic acid should you use?

Over-the-counter lactic acid products sit between 5% and 12%, and higher is not better — the pH matters as much as the percentage.

  • 5% — beginner level, or for use on the body. Mild, usable two to three times a week.
  • 8–10% — the working range for texture and dullness on skin that has already tolerated an acid.
  • 12% and above — experienced users only, once a week at most.
  • Above 15% — professional peel territory. Not something to do at home in Indian sun without supervision.

How do you use lactic acid without irritating your skin?

  1. Patch test first. Inner forearm, two days running. Our guide on how to patch test has the method.
  2. Night only, on dry skin. Applying an acid to damp skin increases penetration unpredictably.
  3. Start twice a week and build to alternate nights only if the skin stays calm.
  4. Follow with a moisturiser the same night. Exfoliating without repairing is how people end up with a compromised barrier.
  5. Sunscreen every morning, without exception. AHAs increase UV sensitivity for up to a week after use. On Indian skin, exfoliating without SPF reliably produces more pigmentation than you started with.

What not to layer it with

Do not stack lactic acid with another exfoliating acid or with retinol on the same night — alternate nights instead. Vitamin C in the morning and lactic acid at night is fine. Who should avoid lactic acid?

Skip it if your barrier is currently damaged — stinging, tightness, flaking and new sensitivity mean the skin needs repair, not exfoliation. Also avoid it on active, inflamed acne, on eczema-prone skin, and alongside prescription retinoids unless a dermatologist has told you otherwise.

Where does lactic acid come from?

Lactic acid was originally isolated from soured milk, and it is still produced by fermentation — today usually from corn starch, beet sugar or cassava rather than dairy. The lactic acid used in skincare is a purified single molecule, so a vegan product containing it is not a contradiction; the label simply reflects the feedstock and the manufacturing route rather than the ingredient itself. This is also why lactic acid appears in traditional remedies involving curd or buttermilk — those contain it at roughly 0.5–1%, far below a formulated exfoliant, and at an uncontrolled pH.

Does lactic acid work on the body?

Yes, and body skin tolerates it better than the face does. Lactic acid lotions are one of the more evidence-backed options for keratosis pilaris, the rough bumps on upper arms and thighs, because the humectant action softens the keratin plug while the exfoliating action clears it. It also helps with rough heels, and with the surface build-up that contributes to dark elbows and knees. Apply it at night to dry skin, and keep it off freshly shaved or waxed areas for 24 hours.

Can you use lactic acid every day?

Most skin does better on two to three nights a week. Daily use of any AHA raises the risk of a compromised barrier, and the results do not improve in proportion.

Does lactic acid lighten skin?

It evens tone by accelerating the shedding of pigmented surface cells, so surface dark marks fade gradually. It does not lighten your natural skin colour, and no topical product does.

How long does lactic acid take to work?

Texture and radiance usually shift in two to three weeks. Surface pigmentation takes 8–12 weeks of consistent use with daily sunscreen.

Is lactic acid safe during pregnancy?

Can lactic acid cause purging?

Mild flaking in the first two weeks is normal. True purging is more associated with retinoids and salicylic acid; persistent new breakouts on lactic acid usually mean irritation rather than purging.
